Seasons

Every year, when the leaves begin to crunch into confetti underneath my shoes, and the nights grow slower and cool, it happens; I wake up, shivering, and crave a cup of coffee. And that's how I know.

It happened early this year. It's not quite September. The grass still has small patches of green, clinging to summer with everything it has. People still wear their shorts and flip flops, oblivious to the changing seasons.

But here in my home, it is autumn, because coffee has been brewing most of the past week. A swirl of cream, a few spoonfuls of sugar from the ceramic jar, and I realize my favorite season have appeared.

When does autumn visit your home? I want to gather all your answers into a post, just because it would make me happy.

How strange that on the day of this post, I'm drinking my first mug of not-quite-espresso in months. I detected a hint of that late-summer scent yesterday afternoon. I'm ready for the falling leaves and the brisk morning air.

Gosh I LOVE fall, this is going to sound weird but I really don't know when fall comes here since I haven't been here that long, but hopefully it cools off here too..haha

When tailgating season begins and the smells of barbecue and beer fill the air. When the leaves start changing colors and the layers start piling on. When I smell cinnamon and pumpkin and apples. When another school year starts and everything seems fresh and new.

Maybe I'm just weird, but I associate a certain feeling with "Halloween weather"... when you go outside and the air is finally sharper, the evening skies are clearer, you can sit on the porch in sweatpants with a glass of wine, the breeze actually starts to prick up the hairs on your arm, the urge to make apple dumplings strikes often and hard, and it's almost like the world is a little cleaner. I can't wait to feel Fall here :)

There's a smell to the air that I don't quite know how to describe. Others have spoken of the crispness or sharpness, so I guess those words will have to suffice. The sun looks different in the fall and it's in a different place in the sky. It's usually right in that spot where your car visors won't block it no matter how you adjust them. ;-)

When I have to pull out the Chihuahua clothes so the tiny one doesn't freeze when temps drop below 70*. Also, when the mountain aspens start turning boring, monochromatic yellow, and I long to see the colorful autumn colors of the midwest or east coast. That's when I really miss home.

when I get excited about finding new scarves to wear. And when I get to pull out my purple and orange fall jackets. I just fall jackets in general...and caramel apple ciders.

I miss home the most in autumn! It is my favorite season and Southern California just gives me nothing :/ Last year it was in the high 80's all through November and December :( The leaves kind of turn a pukey color, but it just isn't the same. Lucky for me I get to head back East this October and hopefully get to take in the smells and feel of autumn!

Southern California has 2 seasons... Summer and light Summer. I don't get my dreamy falls anymore :( but it is my favorite season, so I'm pretending! I'll be heading to Julian to see the pretty leaves, smell the appley/pumpkin/nutty/moist smells of fall, and partake in the fall-y goodness that San Diego just doesn't offer.

Have you ever noticed how different a wind feels when it's swirling around the leaves on the ground? LOVE it. MISS it!

I was just thinking this morning, "Self, make sure to check if the Commissary has any Pumpkin Spice Latte coffee creamer this week!"

The air has been getting a tad bit cooler here at night and it's time to put the comforter back on our bed!

I absolutely love fall and can't wait!

Autumn comes to our house when I start to make all things pumpkin and when the scarves come out - gosh, I LOVE scarves - they are my favorite! Oh! And when we can start opening windows again, cause the air FINALLY cools down!

I looove Autumn. I always know it's finally come when there is a certain, undescribable feeling in the air. It's crisp and smells like freshly raked leaves. I love waking up in the morning to open windows and snuggling under the blankets. I love pulling out my autumn candles - pumpkin is my favorite! So glad it's almost that time of year!

Autumn comes a little bit before our Anniversary... I love that. It comes when the temperature is just right for wearing jeans and t-shirt. When the frost collects on the lawn, autumn has arrived. Autumn comes with hot chocolate and cider, trick-or-treaters, chicken dumpling soup and chili. It's Halloween and campfires with s'mores. Autumn is the stillness of cool nights when you can see your breath, every star, and the moon is bright enough to light your path. It's the fire of the colored leaves in the trees. It's beautiful. I love Autumn.

I think what I look forward to most about fall is the changing of the leaves and then soup season :)

this was a beautiful post, and just look at all these long comments. everyone has their own versions of fall and fun things they look forward to. me? girl, i look forward to crock-pot season as soon as the first leaf turns red. in fact, it's been a bit brisk this week and i've already whipped it out once!

saying hello to fall is awful! Fall may be enjoyable for a week or two and then the comfort of it leaves and the realization that nasty freezing icy winter is approaching. The ONLY thing I like about fall is the ability to leave my home with straightened hair and not worry about frizz taking control. Summer I love you and look forward until me met again.

Sorry for the complaint let me rephrase... Autumn is here and I know for a fact is when I can straighten my hair and it stays frizz free :)

Fall is definitely my favorite season- aptly also called Autumn. I immediately start craving oranges and browns- pumpkin spice coffee- sweaters- apple crisp- swirling leaves on the road. The foliage in Vermont is seriously so beautiful in the fall...and I get glimpses of it while I lounge on my front porch, drinking pumpkin spice coffee while wearing brown and orange. The ultimate fall experience.

In Georgia, it would be when the leaves changed colors, I start buying fall sweaters, make anything with pumpkin in it, and hot cocoa mixes with the pumpkin smell.

And when I start carving pumpkins and hang wreaths on the door :)
Sadly, my autumn will change because of lovely California...oh gosh how I miss trees!!!!!!

Fall is my favorite time of year. There`s a smell about it. I don`t know what that smell is, except it smells like fall. I love it.

For me, it's when college football starts or when I have to put up my flip flops for warmer slippers.

After my birthday. My birthday is always around Labor Day weekend, and I gather my friends for one last summer hoorah! I never let autumn come before my birthday, because I am truly a summer girl. But, after my birthday, I break out my fall decorations and start perusing pumpkins and mums at the local fruit market to decorate my porch :)

I *adore* when the leaves change colour. It is my favourite thing. :)
Of course Autumn begins in March / April down here coinciding with Easter. In the beginning the days are still hot, but the nights are cold. Then the wind starts to pick up and clothes shops begin displaying coats and scarves and gloves and boots. I begin to flick through cookbooks looking for stews and yummyness to bake. Late nights are accompanied with the occasional hot milk with a shot of Wild Turkey's American Honey.
By the way - love that you call it Autumn. I thought is was "Fall" for you guys? :)

I know it's fall when I get cold wearing a t-shirt, jeans and flip flops after 7 pm. I GET to put on a HOODIE (!!!!!!!)to keep warm during "hoodie weather" as I like to call it! :)

wow, this has got a freaking lot of comments!
how awesome is that :)
i'm pretty darn sure coffee [and the people who like it bunches;)] has a magnetism about it....

hmm.
when i see the leaves start turning golden, some of them even jumping straight to a lovely scarlet...when i need to bring a hoodie with me ev.er.y.where. when we go picking apples in the orchard and have tons to do whatever with--apples day, night and inbetween. :)

When the leaves start to turn and when high school and college football begins (not a fan of pro football). I also love wearing jeans and a sweatshirt in the cooler weather:)

As much as I love summer, I love, love Autumn.
It is most definitely my favorite time of the year. Well, up here in Alaska, the leaves don't really change and when they do that usually means snow is right around the corner, so once Autumn hits which is about now, I won't have much time to savor it before the snow comes!
Speaking of so, I hear a cup of coffee calling my name :)

you are so sweet. i love this! and i adored reading all these comments.

for me, it's that chill in the morning...that fall smell when you first walk out into the day. and the leaves, ohh, the leaves. i've missed them changing in southern california, but i can still remember them from when i lived in sacramento and i swear, nothing is more beautiful.

lovely post, dearest.

I just wanted to say, yet again you have inspired me with your beautiful writing!

Since I grew up in Florida, Autumn isn't noticed as much by leaves magically changing colors, unfortunately. It's when you step outside in the early evening and find yourself seeking spots the sun has yet to vanish - the only source of heat left in the atmosphere. Humidity is GONE.

Halloween decor is also beginning to enter the picture! EEK! :)

Autumn is apple cider and pumpkin lattes and cinnamon candles. It's snuggly hoodies and warm scarves, crisp morning air and pretty leaves. It's the reward for surviving another hot summer and the promise of snowball fights and new-life-spring to follow. It's my favorite. <3

I love fall in Illinois.....here in Orlando, Fl fall comes the day the humidity suddenly breaks. It's still 90 outside but suddenly you can stand to have the car windows down or you can walk from your car to your house without breaking a sweat! Seeing fall in the stores, smelling pumpkin and spice candles makes me miss the crisp air and leaves of Illinois, I wish I could see the way the frost covers the trees in the morning, smell the lingering burning of leaves and bonfires. I hope Winston Salem, NC has these things. We move in November and I'm crossing my fingers for some fall this year!
