A Local Favorite

Linking up with Goodnight Moon tonight, of course. I have two songs I wanted to share, both by the lovely Miss Alison Krauss. She just happens to have been raised in good old Chambana, and I really love her music, both for its simplicity and its folk sound. The first song, "Dimming of the Day", is the more personal choice for me. I'm feeling every bit of it tonight. Sigh.

The second song, called "The Scarlet Tide", is one of my favorite war-themed songs. The lyrics are so haunting and sweet. It's from the movie Cold Mountain (which I also love), and I think the music it's set to is perfect.

"Dimming Of the Day" lyrics
This old house is falling down around my ears
I'm drowning in a river of my tears
When all my will is gone you hold me sway
I need you at the dimming of the day

You pulled me like the moon pulls on the tide
You know just where I keep my better side

What days have come to keep us far apart
A broken promise or a broken heart
Now all the bonny birds have wheeled away
I need you at the dimming of the day

Come the night you're only what I want
Come the night you could be my confidant

I see you on the street and in company
Why don't you come and ease your mind with me
I'm living for the night we steal away
I need you at the dimming of the day
I need you at the dimming of the day

"The Scarlet Tide" lyrics
Well, I recall his parting words
Must I accept his fate?
Or take myself far from this place?
I thought I heard a black bell toll
A little bird did sing
Man has no choice
When he wants every thing

We'll rise above the scarlet tide
That trickles down through the mountain
And separates the widow from the bride

Man goes beyond his own decision
Gets caught up in the mechanism
Of swindlers who act like kings
And brokers who break everything
The dark of night was swiftly fading
Close to the dawn of day
Why would I want him just to lose him again?

We'll rise above the scarlet tide
That trickles down through the mountain
And separates the widow from the bride

I'm kind of obsessed with Alison Krauss. Seriously. I really like the song, "Paper Airplane" off of her new album. I added it to my rainy day playlist. It's perfect. But, I really like both of these songs too. I recognize the song from Cold Mountain, but the first song, I haven't heard yet. Thanks for sharing.

gosh they're beautiful songs.
it's amazing when you can find songs with words that bring out and word those emotions in a special, or just honest, aching way.

And this is why I love the link-ups every week. I'd never listened to her before. Yep. That's right. I'm glad I can say I have now. She has a beautiful and very soothing voice. I really like the lyrics, too. It's nice to hear poetry.
