That was us- you and me.
You and me, making promises in a crowded room with old wooden floors that creaked underneath your glossy black uniform shoes and my borrowed ivory heels. You and me, nervously slipping bands onto each other's fingers. You and me, watching Saturday, the 16th of January get closer and closer on the calendar, and practicing the wedding kiss on the days before. You and me, listening to your brother, who married us, telling a story about a garden, and how marriage must be taken care of and tended in the same way. You and me, eating dinner that night at our favorite Italian place, knowing no one else in the restaurant was aware we had just become bride and groom. You and me, talking on opposite sides of the bathroom door that morning, because I didn't dare let you see me in my white dress and birdcage veil until I walked in to become your wife. You and me, excited when the guests had all gone home and it was the two of us standing in the pink rose petals scattered for us earlier that day. You and me, as our heads lay on our pillows and you called me your wife.
You and me, the couple that shattered and fell apart, but came together again,
and have this second anniversary as a shiny medal to prove that we can do anything. You and me, making plans to celebrate this Monday as the day, 2 years ago, we began something bigger than ourselves.
I never knew that I could love someone the way that I love you.
