The Second Day

"You yourself,
as much as anybody in the entire universe,
deserve your love and affection"

Day 02 → Something you love about yourself.

There isn't a long list here. But something I decided I love about myself is something that I think a lot of people my age have lost, so maybe it's the rarity that makes it special.

I love my sense of tradition. It's almost an obsession with me, the need to do things the way my family has done them when I was little. I want a real, freshly cut Christmas tree every year, because picking out the perfect one and having Dad get out the saw is one of my favorite memories. I want to eat the same Christmas cookies my mom and my grandma used to make. I want the exact same songs to play, the silver tinsel to be used, and the same ornaments from my parents' first Christmases together to be hung up.

The picture of Amelia above? She's sleeping in an old wicker bassinet that has been in my family (and used by almost every baby in it) since the 1940s, when my grandma used it for her first child. Amelia only slept in it a couple weeks or so. But I needed her to- it's tradition. I needed to be able to tell her that she used it just like I had when I was a baby.

It's not that I can't be my own person- I disagree with my parents on some things, and definitely don't do everything the same. I think there is something valuable in passing down memories, though. I think it's what made my childhood the way it was, because my parents were the same way. It kind of connects all the generations. And I hope Amelia's children will have the same experience.
