The Twenty-third Day

"You are lucky to be one of those people who wishes to build sand castles with words,
who is willing to create a place where your imagination can wander.
We build this place with the sand of memories;
these castles are our memories and inventiveness made tangible.
So part of us believes that when the tide starts coming in, we won't really have lost anything,
because actually only a symbol of it was there in the sand [...]
This is what separates artists from ordinary people: the belief, deep in our hearts,
that if we build our castles well enough, somehow the ocean won't wash them away.
I think this is a wonderful kind of person to be."

Day 23 → Something you wish you had done in your life.

If you've read me long, you may remember my latest brush with school and how I was resolved to get things done. But I was working full time. And then Sky came home from the deployment right as I was finishing two summer classes. And then I got pregnant. And then, and then, and then.

Something I wish I had done is go to college the second I was done with high school. I've taken several classes, but I still don't even have an associate degree and I hate that. More than anything, I would love to be a 'real' writer- i.e., get paid to sit in a lovely home office and write whatever my little heart desires- but any type of writing job seems to require a degree. I've longed for a journalism degree ever since I can remember, but life got in the way- or I let life get in the way. At 26 years old, I suppose I've still got all the time in the world, but it doesn't feel that way anymore.

So that's my regret- that I'm not who I want to be. Because if I were, I would tell you all about the sorority I was in, the horrible dorm food, the late nights studying at Starbucks, the sweet boyfriend who I thought was the one but actually wasn't, the countless games and activities, the three close friends that never left my side, and the years of taking laundry home to my dad's house. Instead, all I can tell you about are my jobs. Ugh.

4 kind comments from you:

I would have to say that I agree with you! I wish that I had went straight from HS to college! If only we knew then what we know now!

I am with you. I wish I could tell you about the 6 years I spent in school instead of the 6 years I spent making Coffee at Starbucks. I plan on going back to school next year, but I will make it a priority that my children will NOT make the same mistake I did, they will have the opportunity to go to college right away.

I turn 26 on Saturday. I can't believe I am that old already. :)

There's never a too late so don't be discouraged! I'm graduating this semester after 7 YEARS working towards my degree!! Kids, moves and crazy military life always got in the way. My mom got her PhD at 45 and is a new professor at 50. Don't give up and don't be too hard on yourself!
