DIY: Homemade Febreze

When I wrote the post about making my own laundry soap, I also mentioned I had made homemade Febreze that same day. In fact, I think it's much better than Febreze because it uses fabric softener, so it repels static and smells wonderful. Like my dad said, Febreze is mostly water, and buying a $5.00 bottle of water doesn't appeal to me at all.

I had a request to share that recipe with you, too. It's so simple, and there are a hundred variations (some that include vinegar, rubbing alcohol, vodka, essential oils, and more). I went with the one I liked best and made the most sense to me.

Ingredients:
1/4 cup liquid fabric softener
1 tablespoon baking soda
2 cups warm water (I didn't measure the water- just added the first two ingredients, then filled the rest of the bottle with water.)

Pour into a spray bottle (I used my old Febreze bottle), and shake well to mix.

The fabric softener I bought was the Target store brand in the Fresh Linen scent (around 3 or 4 dollars). You can pick any liquid fabric softener scent you like- I just used this because the cost was so low (oh, and because I love Target). I love that it smells clean, and makes me feel like I've been working all day doing laundry when I've actually been to busy to touch it. Although buying a bottle of real Febreze just isn't in the budget anymore, I will be able to make dozens and dozens of the homemade kind for the price I'd pay for just one bottle.

I'd love to hear if you tried it, and if you have any more tips on saving pennies! (And I got some amazing tips on the last post- a great way to stretch soup from Vintch, a lot of good tips from Erin, and some homemade cleaner from The New Normal. Thanks guys!)

That's amazing! I spend soooo much money on febreze because nothing bothers me more than a bad smelling house (especially if it's mine!)

Awesome! It sounds so much healthier than regular Febreze...

Okay, this is pretty cool, but have you found DIY dishwasher powder or liquid? Now that we don't eat out anymore we're going through that stuff like CRAZY! Just wondering. :)

I cannot wait to try this! I love Febreze but could go through a bottle in a few days. Thanks for sharing it!

A while back I read a few "recipes" for DIY dishwasher powder, using borax and a few other ingredients, but the reviews said the dishes came out looking horrible. Plus I wasn't sure about using borax on something we would eat off of. If you do find a good way to make this too, I'd also be interested!

Okay I LOVE this. Had all these items on hand and usually do. I have two toddlers so I use way to much Febreze. You have just saved me so much money. Going to be making the laundry detergent too. Love your DIY ideas.
